Sooooo… it’s been a while. You know how when you have everything juggling nicely in the air, and people ask you, “how do you do it all?” Well, I had way too many balls in the air, and I completely dropped the ball with this blog. I was not handling everything “nicely,” and thought if I just keep throwing everything up, I could find a way to keep it all moving. Life has caught up with me, and I’ve made some personal changes that will hopefully pay dividends at home. I thought about blogging so many times, but I had every excuse. Work, sleep, work, kids, work… seeing the trend? I’ve missed blogging so much, and I hope to return to blogging weekly, but we’ll see. My priorities were stretching me in opposite directions, and re-balancing was loonnnnnng overdue.
On Friday, Hubby and I went on our 2015 vision retreat. Usually, we do this in January, but clearly, you see that life has taken over. Hubby and I really needed a day two reconnect, communicate and goal set, so we took the day off and headed to King Spa for water slides, hot tubs, sauna’s and sharing and setting our plans for the year. We started by reviewing our 2014 goals to see what we actually accomplished.
I hadn’t looked at my goals in several months, so a few things were a positive surprise. I had accomplished a handful of goals, including teaching FPU with Hubby, beginning a weight training regime, paying off a ton of student loans, and creating monthly budgets. On the other hand, I was shocked to see the goals that I had abandoned. I started a Bible reading program, that I didn’t even make a quarter of the way through and I failed miserably on a all my parenting goals. As Hubby and I reviewed our 2014 results, we realized that we didn’t have a a lot of joint goals. And that was a problem. We were focused on our individuals goals, but in doing so, we weren’t focused on making each other happy. This year, we started our goal setting by defining six roles that we want to fill. I selected disciple, wife, mom, steward, runner and leader. After we picked our six, we had four that overlapped, so we wrote down joint goals for those categories. We both had to agree on the goal, the metric and the timeframe.
Once we completed the joint goals, we added our individual goals. We realized we fell off keeping track of our progress, and knew we needed something big and interrupting that we’d see everyday. We decided to take-over the walls in the garage for our goals. One wall is for us to monitor our progress, and they other wall is for the kiddos to join us. On the kids’ wall, they can write a goal for the week, or pose with a favorite prop. One of our parenting goals consisted of doing more family activities, so we agreed to try another photo project that keeps the kids front and center. So we present the making of Garage Goals!
Above is the “before” pic. Below is the “parents” goal wall. We’re still figuring out how to add more color to it. Further down are the kids first shots. They were excited for a wall all to themselves. I took the pics on mobile phones, so the dimensions weren’t big enough for my blog frame. I won’t make that mistake next time.
