I Googled “How to Make an Ice Bath”

Several weeks ago I shared that I started running with Black Girls RUN! After my first run, my muscles were achy, tight and obstinate, so the day after my second run I immediately sought remedies for my muscle pain. I remembered a scene from The Biggest Loser where folks soaked their entire bodies in metal tubs with ice bobbing around.

I knew it was extreme, but the muscle aches had to cease. So after the Saturday morning BGR! long run I emptied the freezer tray into the bath while filling it with water, handle turned all the way to the right for the “coldest” setting. Was I really doing this? Yes, and it was so necessary. I eased into the tub, yelling “Owee-Ohhhhh!” The contrasting temperature was shocking, but eventually my body adjusted and it felt like a fresh dip in the stream.

Since then, I’ve run at least three days a week. It has been addictive in a great way. I’ve fit in runs before work, and it’s so invigorating to exercise and manage my stress and health surrounded by a group of women, all going in the same direction. The tangible results have been slow to appear, but the stress management is irreplaceable. The scale says I’ve lost four pounds, and then I gained it back, so I haven’t quite matched my diet changes to the progress I’ve made on the fitness side, and that’s okay for now.

This is inspiration. I’ve signed up for the group but have yet to go run. My mindset has been that I need to start running by myself before running with them, but I think that was a big excuse. I’m gonna put on my big girl running shoes and join them on Monday morning at 5:30am. (yikes)

Congratulations to you! Running has done great things for me, too. Besides dropping a pound or two (which wasn’t even my intention), I’ve had almost zero stress since I’ve started running three days a week (three miles per run).

I did the Couch-to-5K program (wrote about it back in mid-August) and it has changed my life. I just hate that I didn’t start running sooner.

Anyhoo, congrats to you! I look forward to hearing about your journey!
